Memorial service for Byron Wolverton Aycock M.D., 92, of Lawton, Oklahoma, will be at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Al Potts, pastor, officiating.
Dr. Aycock died on Friday, November 07, 2008, in Lawton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.
He was born on November 9, 1915, in Lawton, Oklahoma to Fowler P. and Mabel Wolverton Aycock. He attended Lawton High School where he played in the band and graduated in 1933. He then attended Cameron Junior College, University of Oklahoma, University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and graduated in 1940. He did his residency training in Opthalmology and Otolaryngology. He later joined the United States Navy and was a Physician in World War II where he was stationed in Attu and Adak, Alaska. He married Doris Glen Hanna on January 2, 1942 in Hobart, Oklahoma.
He later began a private practice of medicine specializing in eye, ear, nose, and throat. He practiced with Robert Dennis, MD and later with his son Alan Aycock, MD. He was the first Board Certified Physician in Comanche County and was on the medical staffs of Angus Hospital, Comanche County Memorial Hospital, Southwestern Hospital, a consultant at Lawton Indian Hospital, and Reynolds Army Community Hospital, and part-time faculty at University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. He retired in 1987.
He was the first Eagle Scout in Lawton, was Chief of Staff at Comanche Memorial and Southwestern Hospitals, was on the Southwest Oklahoma Opera Guild, an avid supporter of Cameron University and University of Oklahoma. He was a Citizen of Arts, Lawton, Distinguished Alumna Cameron University, 1997, a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, Knife and Fork Club, and a member of the Lonestar Chapter of the American Cut Glass Association. He was a proud member of the First United Methodist Church of Lawton for over 80 years where he was a choir member, and served on many committees. He was honored by the University of Oklahoma in 2007 as a season ticket holder since 1946. Dr. and Mrs. Aycock received the Lawton Arts and Humanity Council 2004 Citizens of the Arts Award.
With friends, he and his wife, Doris, enjoyed traveling and visited many places including 71 countries, 6 continents, and 49 states.
He is survived by four children and their spouses: Alan Aycock, M.D. and his wife, Sandy, of Lawton, Oklahoma, Jane Rankin and her husband, Gordon, of Monument, Colorado, Keith Aycock and his wife, June, Lawton, Oklahoma, and Andrea Wilkinson and her husband, Jeff, of Kingwood, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Heather Lynn Crollett and her husband, Shaun, Todd Aycock, Jennifer Bonifield and her husband Jeremy, Andrea Doris Aycock, Leah Fike and her husband, Jimmy, Seth Rankin, and his wife, Kelli, Brett Rankin and his wife, Erin, Adrienne Rene Rankin, Jennifer Staats and her husband, David, Spencer Aycock and his wife, Katrina, Beth Bagley and her husband, John, and Michelle Wilkinson; 9 great grandchildren, Kyle Fike, Amanda Fike, Emmajane Rankin, Wyatt Rankin, Lilly Rankin, Sarah Elizabeth Staats, Caleb Aycock, Eva Aycock, and Samuel Aycock.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris, brother, Everett, sisters, Lena Walden and Florence Aycock.
