Elfriede Mason

Funeral service for Elfriede Mason, 89, of Lawton, Oklahoma will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at the Western Hills Christian Church.  Pastor Dave Menge will officiate. 

Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery

Mrs. Mason passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019 in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Services are under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

Viewing will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2019 and will continue until her funeral service.

A special visitation will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday June 18, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  

Elfriede was born September 21, 1929 in Giessen-Klein-Linden Germany to Karl and Wilhelmine Klingelhoefer-Schmidt.  Elfriede worked as a sales person in Frankfort Germany at the Neckermann Mail order house and at the Quarter Master Depot at the Rivers Barracks USA Army Base.  She meet Sgt. Eugene Mason at the base and they got married.  Elfriede had two children, Detlev “Ted” and Terry Mason. The family lived at Fort Bragg N.C. before being transferred to Lawton\Ft. Sill area.  Eugene and Elfriede made Lawton their permanent residence.  Elfriede was a homemaker and ran an in home day care service for 16 years before retiring for health reasons.  Elfriede was a member of the Western Hills Christian Church and an active member of the Northside Nutrition site since 1992.  Elfriede enjoyed the company of other church members and playing dominoes and bingo at the nutrition center.  Elfriede was an avid bingo player for many years and won almost every time.  Elfriede enjoyed spending the day tending to her many gardens and flower beds.  In the evening, she loved to go dancing and singing with fellow senior citizens.

Elfriede was known by family and friends as “Oma” (German for grandmother).  After meeting Oma for the first time you were considered family and she would have it no other way.  Oma loved to spend time with her family and friends and always had Tic Tacs to give out to the grand kids.  

She is survived by son Terry and daughter-in-law Nancy Mason of Lawton; daughter-in-law: Cathy Mason of Lawton; her grandsons and their spouses: Alan and Susan Mason, Mark and Crystal Mason, Coy Bishop and Maegan Gatlin, Josh Bishop and Angela Proctor; her granddaughter, Lauren Mason. Great grandchildren: Matthew, Isabel, Andrew, Cole, Robert, Hunter, Jaxson, Reece, and Bianca.  She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins that are in both the United States and Germany.

She is preceded in death by her Father and Mother Karl and Wilhelmine Klingelhoefer-Schmidt, sisters Elli Schmidt and Maria Leschhorn, former spouse Eugene Mason, and a son Detlev “Ted” Mason.
