Funeral service for SFC (ret) Richard J. Chagnon, 71, of Lawton will be at 11:00 a.m, on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Jim Coe officiating.
Mr. Chagnon passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017 in Lawton.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Richard was born on October 17, 1946 in Spencer, Massachusetts to Albert and Ruth (Boyle) Chagnon. He served his country in the United States Army for over 20 years and was stationed in many locations including Nurnburg, Germany, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, Gelhausen, Germany, Vietnam, and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He received many awards and medals including the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm Leaf, three Overseas Service Bars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal-6, Two Overseas Service Ribbons, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon-3, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Sharpshooter, and Rifle M-16. He retired from the military on September 23, 1986. He later worked for Southwestern Medical Center as a security guard for 13 years. He also was a volunteer at Southwestern Medical Center. Richard met Ursula Fleischer while stationed overseas in Germany and they married on April 10, 1972 in Hartford Connecticut. Mrs. Chagnon passed away on September 21, 2013. He was a devoted and active member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter in law, Robert John and Shelly Chagnon, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Richard Carl "Ricky" Chagnon, of Lawton, Oklahoma; his daughter and son in law, Betina and Richard Underhill, of Lawton, Oklahoma; grandchildren and their spouses, Matthew and Jon Chagnon, Erik Chagnon and Teresa, Grant Shaffer, Joey Underhill, Emily and Dylan Winters, Aimee and James Potter, Robbie Chagnon, Erin Chagnon, and Haley Chagnon; and his great grandchildren, Ellie Chagnon, Natalie Barrientes, and Jessica Barrientes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ursula Chagnon.
The family would like to thank the Comanche County Memorial Hospital ICU and CVICU for the care they showed our dad and our family.
