Velma "Ruth" Cheney

Funeral service for Velma "Ruth" Cheney, 87, of Lawton will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at First Baptist East with Rev. Tim Martin, youth pastor officiating.   

Ruth joined her valentine, Ed, in their heavenly home on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. 

Entombment will be in the Good Shepherd Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Gardens. 

Arrangements are under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home. 

There will be a special viewing and visitation for family and friends on Monday, February 19, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  

Ruth was born on December 21, 1930 in Bray, Oklahoma to Marshall and Mary Elizabeth (Cowley) Abney. She grew up in Stephens County where she attended school. She worked as a waitress at the White Rock Cafe in Marlow, Oklahoma for a short period and then began her career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator and later became an estimate assigner, retiring in 1985 after 34 years of dedicated service. She married Wallace Easton on April 18, 1953 and to that union, a son, David and daughter, Tammy were born. She later married Edwin J. "Ed" Cheney on December 20, 1985. Mr. Cheney passed away on July 21, 2008. Ruth was a member of the Kuntry Kuzins, Telephone Pioneers, and First Baptist East. She enjoyed square dancing, bowling, sewing and quilting which she taught many of her granddaughters in "Sewing Classes". Her greatest accomplishment was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.          

She is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Tammy and Gerald Neuwirth, of Lawton, OK, Marlene and Jim Glass, of Whitehouse, TX, and Darlene and Stan Smith, of Gig Harbor, WA; her sons, and a daughter in law, David B. Easton, of Indiahoma, OK and Edwin Cheney, Jr. and Carolyn Cheney, of Broken Arrow, OK; her grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Jason Edgar, Bonnie and Russell Pruitt, Nikki Hill-Wright, Maggie and Jorge Rodriguez, Nicole Wright, Abbie Wright, Lori Clanton, Krista Clark, Sierra Glass, Kimberly and Dillan Drake, Kalli Cheney, Kyle and Debbie Hartman, Keith and Kristin Hartman; great grandchildren, Easton and Audrey Edgar, Ryan and Tyson Pruitt, Kipton Wright, Gabriel, Rylan, and Adylan Rodriguez; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed Cheney; sister, Bobbie Brennan, brother, Ralph Abney; one grandson, Keegan Wright; one granddaughter, Rachel Easton; and one  son in law, Nick Wright.
