Barbara Carter Newstadt

October 2, 1939 ~ September 26, 2017 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Barbara Carter Newstadt, age 77, died peacefully Tuesday morning at her home in Ten Oaks Place Retirement Community.

Born in Faxon, Oklahoma in 1939, to Raymond and Opal Jumper Carter, Barbara was raised in Dexter, New Mexico. She went on to graduate from Stephens College of Missouri, continuing her education at the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority and the PanHellenic council, graduating with a BA in Sociology in 1960.

She went on to work the Social Security Administration throughout the 1960’s, ultimately introducing and publicizing the newly enacted Medicare program to rural communities in South and North Louisiana. Her efforts resulted in the enrollment of hundreds of constituents, providing many with first-ever formal medical care. She married David Newstadt of Shreveport, Louisiana in 1967 and returned to Lawton in the mid-1980’s with her children. A passionate Sooners football fan, she was known throughout her life for her intelligence, wit, skill in the kitchen and an encyclopedic knowledge of British murder mysteries.

She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Makk and Barbara Ellen Dovie (Don), both of New Orleans, and three grandchildren, Hannah Makk and Donnie and Charlie Dovie.

A private burial will be held at the Faxon Cemetery at a later time; Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home will provide arrangements.
