CSM Curtis Arnold Underwood Sr., US Army Retired, departed this life on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, age 83, at his home in Lawton, OK.
Curtis was born August 20, 1938, to Lloyd and Artelia (Box) Underwood in Sheffield, Alabama where he attended school and graduated from Sterling High School.
Curtis served honorably in the United States Army retiring after 31 years on July 31, 1989. His time in the Army saw him serve two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Korea, three tours in Germany, and other duty stations in the US. In his service to his country, he not only achieved the rank of Command Sargent Major but earned awards and medals.
Along the way Curtis was united in marriage to Mary Ada Underwood (Haney) July 9, 1961, and to this union two children were born: Veretta and Curtis Jr. He was a loving, caring, and supportive husband and father. He was a humble and honorable man who cared not only for his family but his community.
He was the Master Mason serving in different Masonic organizations until he was called home. Some of his Masonic ties: Joined Prince Hall Military Lodge #140 in Germany, January 12,1965. He demitted to Mistletoe Lodge #31 Lawton December 4,1990. He was a member Stewart Chapter #34, Holy Royal Arch Masons Golden Limit Consistory #133, Valley of Lawton, Orient, Menes Shrine temple #32.
Curtis was also a man of faith and a committed member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Lawton, OK, where he served as a deacon and on various committees over the years.
He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, and friend to many and whose earthly presence will be missed. He loved music and played the saxophone, piano, and trumpet.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife Mary Ada Underwood (Haney) of 60 years of the home, daughter Veretta Underwood; son Curtis Underwood Jr, both of Lawton, grandchildren: Serena Laci Davis and her husband Marcel of Tulsa, OK, Alexis Mary Underwood, Abigail Eskildsen, Jace Eskildsen, and great-grandson Damarion (DJ) Underwood all of Lawton, a sister, Gloria U. Davis of Huntsville, AL, sisters-in-law: Ruby D. Underwood of Florence, AL, Denise Ross (Carlton) Montgomery, AL, and Helen Ingram of Syracuse, NY, brothers-in-law: Judge Ingram (Deborah) of Canton, MI & David Fields of Detroit,MI
He also leaves behind a godson, Horace Young Jr. of Killeen, TX, a host of friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a loving extended family which includes Rodney Fisher, Reggie Fisher, Butch Huskey, Donovan Demartra, Sexto and Celenia Figueroa and others whom he considered sons, daughters, and family.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ethel “MaMa” Ricks Underwood, his parents, siblings: Max Underwood, Dorothy U, Winston, Lloyd Underwood Sr., Lawrence “Joe” Underwood, Mildred “Bay Faye” U. Davis, and Phillip “Rabbit” Underwood, Two brothers-in-law: Leonard Ingram and Jessie Haney, and sister-in-law Clima Fields.
