Shortly, thereafter, Buddy joined the United States Army serving in the 1st Battalion 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division achieving the rank, Sargent E5 before leaving the military.  After serving in the military, Buddy returned to Louisiana where he attended Grambling College. Buddy was a student leader and civil rights activist; collectively chosen as Freshman Class President. In 1967, he received a full scholarship to transfer to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2008, he retired from Bank of America in Las Vegas, Nevada as an executive vice president.

Buddy was a devoted father of two daughters – Patricia Regerald Guidry and Erin Krista Brown.
