Edward (Buddy) Brown III quietly passed away in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 16, 2020. He was the oldest son, of the late Master Sergeant (Ret) Edward Brown, Jr. and the late Sylvia Magdalene Shaw Brown. Buddy was a father and patriarch of his sixteen sisters and brothers.
Buddy was born in Lake Providence, Louisiana on June 17, 1944, and was educated in several school systems as result of his father’s military deployments during his childhood. In 1962, he graduated from Sevier High School in Ferriday, Louisiana as “salutatorian”. Shortly, thereafter, Buddy joined the United States Army serving in the 1st Battalion 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division achieving the rank, Sargent E5 before leaving the military. After serving in the military, Buddy returned to Louisiana where he attended Grambling College. Buddy was a student leader and civil rights activist; collectively chosen as Freshman Class President. In 1967, he received a full scholarship to transfer to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Buddy became a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, and in 1970, he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.
He was a leader and a change agent, always encouraging others to look for “better”. For over 30 years, Buddy spent his career in the banking and financial industry in the Los Angeles area, working in progressive leadership roles at City National Bank, Santa Monica Bank, Security Pacific Bank, and finally at Bank of America. In 2008, he retired from Bank of America in Las Vegas, Nevada as an executive vice president.
Buddy was a devoted father of two daughters – Patricia Regerald Guidry and Erin Krista Brown.
In 1966, Buddy and Marian Venita Guidry welcomed Patricia Regereld Guidry. Patricia was born in Monroe, Louisiana, and currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida. She has two sons: Frank and Tramaine; and five grandchildren: Chloe, Chylie, Major, Maddyson and Tramari. Patricia attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is currently General Manager at Wendy’s.
In 1979, Buddy and Abbie Fredrena Dickerson were married in Las Vegas, Nevada, and later divorced in 1991. From this union, they welcomed daughter, Erin Krista Brown in 1983. Erin was born in Los Angeles, California and lived near her father in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she earned two Bachelor’s Degrees in Political Science and Fine Art from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She also earned her Master’s of Laws Degree from Pepperdine Caruso School of Law. She is currently a Peace Officer for State of Nevada Parole and Probation.
Buddy succumbed on October 16, 2020, after battling a long-term illness.
In his legacy he left his children, his service to his country, and a profound impact on his family as historian and pioneer. We are all better because of his leadership and ability to model the way.
Well done faithful servant, suffer no more.
In addition to his parents, Buddy was predeceased by two brothers – Robert Louis Brown, Johnny Mack Brown, and a dear sister Edna Marie “Brown” Isadore.
He leaves to mourn his daughter – Patricia Guidry, Jacksonville, FL; Erin Brown, Las Vegas, NV; six brothers: Henry Brown – Arlington, TX, Anthony Brown – Houston, TX, Raymond Brown – Jonesboro, GA, Todd Brown (Sheila) – Southlake, TX, Gary Brown – Charlotte, NC and Cary Brown – Houston, TX. He also leaves to mourn six sisters – Barbara Mortenson (Jeff) – Palm Bay, FL, Josie Smith (Earl) – Mansfield, TX, Medessa Hall (Eugene) – Rowlett, TX, Sylvia Jones (Ernest) – Newport News, VA, Nell Penny (Earnest) – Wesley Chapel, FL, Denezza Thomas( Emanuel) – Collierville, TN and Dionne Noisette (Louis) – Collierville, TN.
He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and countless friends.
Buddy, also left to mourn his very best friend, William Young of Grand Prairie, Texas. They met in 1969 while attending UCLA and were close friends for over 50 years.
