Memorial service for Frances Marie Mitchell, 82 of Lawton will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 8, 2021 at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mitchell passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021 in Lawton.
Frances was born on August 12, 1939 in Long Beach, California to John Francis and Marie Antoinette (Genito) Baker. She grew up in Long Beach where she attended school, graduating from Progress High School in 1957. She married and traveled with her husband's military career. She lived in Germany and later came to the Lawton/Fort Sill area in 1975. Frances worked as an EEG/EKG supervisor at Comanche County Memorial Hospital for many years before retiring in the 1980's, and returned to college earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cameron University in May of 1993. While at Cameron, she was a member of Alpha PSI Omega (National Drama Honor Society in 1990). She was inducted into the Beta Omicron Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta National English Honor Society in September of 1991 and was a part of the National Education Association, Oklahoma Education Association, and Marlow Association of Classroom Teachers. Before settling into her career at Eisenhower High School, she worked briefly at Geronimo High School, Marlow High School, and Snyder High School. She was a member of the SCA Club and was Pom Sponsor 1999-2001. She was Catholic. She received the Champion for Children Award in 2001.
She is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Connie and Mac Peckham, of Decatur, TX, Mary Herrera, and Becky and John Destefano, of Lawton, OK; her grandchildren, Shellbie Morales and Julian Gonzalez; her great granddaughter, Sophie Tillman; and other loving relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Dolores Marie Dunn; and her brother, Stanley Baker.
