James "JR" Edward Gibson, Jr

Funeral service for James "JR" Edward Gibson, Jr., 59 of Lawton will be at 12:00 p.m. on  Friday, May 31, 2019 at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Gibson passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019 in Lawton.  

Burial will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Oklahoma.

Viewing will be held on Thursday, May 30th, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  

JR was born on May 19, 1959 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma to James Edward Gibson, Sr. and Lorene (Wilson) Gibson. He grew up in Newport News, Virginia where he attended school. At the age of 18, he became the manager of Wendy's and then went on to work at the shipyard. He joined the United States Army in 1981 and served his country until retiring in 2003. While in the military he received many awards and medals including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (5th Award), Army Achievement Medal, (7th Award), Army Good Conduct Medal, (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal, (2nd Award), Non-commissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 2, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar, Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Grenade Bar, Air Assault Badge, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver Bar. JR later worked as the manager of Sears and also at Stripes. At the time of his passing, he was the Director of the Apache Casino Convenience Stores. JR married Michelle "Shelley" Cunningham on August 5, 1995 in Lawton. He enjoyed golfing, playing at the casino and he adored his grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him.  

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Michelle "Shelley" Gibson, of the home; his sons and their spouses, JT and Rebecca Gibson, of Illinois, John and Samantha Gibson, of Virginia, Joseph Gibson, of Virginia, Justin Gibson and Whitney Hargrove, of Oklahoma, and Randall Gibson, of Texas; his daughter, Sallie Gibson, of Florida; his sisters and their spouses, Linda Clingan, of North Carolina, Betty Gibson, of New York, Judy and Calvin Harris, of Virgina, Jamie and John Londree, of Virginia, and Sharon and  Donald Garland, of Virginia; numerous grandchildren including Stephanie, Jenna, JR, Kegan, Elizabeth, Alexis, Cooper, Baby Girl Charlie, and Tenslee; his mother in law and father in law, Jerry and Dolores Cunningham, of West Virginia; brothers in laws and sisters in law, Kate Cunningham, Dan and Carrie Cunningham, and Jeff and Meredith Cunningham;  and his brother from another mother, Kenneth Candley, of Lawton.    

He was preceded in death by his parents.
