Joann (Settle) Nielsen

Memorial services for Joann Nielsen, 84, of Lawton will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 in the Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor June Tucker officiating.   

Mrs. Nielsen departed to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 5th, 2017.

Joann was born  in the family's farm house in Duke, Oklahoma on February 22, 1933  to Odis and Iva Jo Settle.  She grew up and attended school in Duke.  She married Harland Nielsen in Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.  She was a devoted Army wife who traveled with her husband.  They lived in many places to include France, Italy, and Germany.  For over twenty years she worked as the night club manager of the local Holiday Inn.  After retiring from the Holiday Inn, she worked at J.C. Penny's.  She also enjoyed volunteering at Comanche County Memorial Hospital.  She was a Gray lady with the American Red Cross, she belonged to the Berlin Chapter of Eastern Star, she belonged to the Red Hat society, was a member of the E.S.A. Sorority of Lawton, and a member of the Lawton Heights Methodist Church.  In her free time, Joann enjoyed going to estate sales and thrift shopping with her best friend Bonnie Walters. She loved animals, especially dogs.  She was a big football fan and enjoyed rooting for both the OU Sooners and the Dallas Cowboys.  She will be remembered for her kind and tender heart.

She is survived by her son, Phillip Nielsen of Lawton, OK. Her grandson, Justin Nielsen of Phoenix, AZ and her best friend who was like a sister, Bonnie Walters of Lawton, OK; and a host of friends, neighbors, and church family. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harland Nielsen, her parents, her brother, Norman Settle and three infant sons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be mailed to the Lawton Animal Shelter, located at 2104 S.W. 6th Street, Lawton, OK 73501.
