Word has been received of the death of SFC (ret) Leo Welch Mahan Jr, 65 of Lawton. 

Mr. Mahan passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 in Lawton, Oklahoma. 

A private family gathering with full military honors will be held at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.  

Arrangements are under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home. 

Leo was born on July 31, 1952 in Ooltewah, Tennessee to Leo Welch Mahan Sr. and Delcia Mae (Stephens) Mahan.  He grew up in Conway Arkansas where he attended school. He married Donna Lee Bernick on February 6, 1971 in Conway, Arkansas. He then joined the United States Army on March 8, 1971 and served his country for 20 years before retiring on September 30, 1991. He served in the Gulf War  also was stationed in Korea. Leo received many awards and medals including  the National Defense Service Medal with Service Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal-Korea, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Bar, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Driver and Mechanic Badge with driver emblem. After the military, he continued to honor the military and soldiers by working as a Defense Contractor. He was a proud Army Veteran to the Field Artillery Community. Leo loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed going to his grandson, Bryce's football games. He had a passion for muscle cars and Harleys  and enjoyed many throughout the years. 

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of the home; two sons and a daughter in law, Richard M. Mahan and Brian A. and Brandi Mahan; his brother, Michael D. Mahan; two grandchildren, Bryce A. Mahan and Ryan W. Middleton; and his nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.
