Mary Lou Dunning, 90, of Lawton, Oklahoma passed away peacefully amongst family members on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 in Lawton.
Viewing will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.
Born Mary Lou Hartman to Herbert and Florence Hartman on June 18, 1930 in Cyril, Oklahoma. She was the second oldest of four children, which have all preceded her in homecoming. The family moved to Lawton when Mary was one year old, and she attended Lincoln Elementary, later graduating high school with a 4.0 GPA.
At 19, she married Lawton Firefighter Olan Winham (from March of 1949 to January of 1961) and they had two sons; Steven and Ronald.
While raising her children, Mary took to the work of a telephone operator, Wacker's store clerk, and did flower arranging on the side before embarking on what would be a 25 year career at Montgomery Ward in October of 1966. She met Donald Dunning and they married on November 1, 1968, three years later Mary had her third son, Jeffrey.
In the era which Mary lived, family was considered to be your closest friends, and there was not much she wouldn't do for those she devoted her life to. Mary was hard-working to say the least, even in her much later years you could find her behind a lawn mower or tackling foliage by any means necessary.
You could count on Mary to remember any event concerning her loved ones, followed by a beautifully handwritten card, popcorn cake, or other gift that would soon come your way without fail.
Her smile would be commented on and carried by persons that felt its need, and her wit surprised most who were unfamiliar. The poised and always proper Mary remained poised yet studiously ruthless if challenged to Skip Bo or Dominoes.
In recent years, the gift of companionship came in the form of a very protective Cha-weenie by the name of Sammy, who never left her side even while fending off evil doors.
She is survived by her sons: Steve, Dale, and Jeffrey; her daughter in law and blessing, Vicky; her grandson, Gary; and her granddaughter, Avery.
We are grateful for our time with Mary, an exceptional Child of God who was a great example to all who came to know her.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the CCMH Cancer Center and Hospice for the exceptional care that was provided to our beloved mother.
