Memorial service for 1SG (ret) Milton Leo Landmark, 79, of Lawton will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Potts, pastor, officiating.
1SG (ret) Landmark passed away on Monday, June 24th, 2013, in Lawton.
Private entombment will be at the Fort Sill National Cemetery on Monday with full military honors under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.
He was born on March 23rd, 1934 in Sisseton, South Dakota, to Leonard and Pearl (Snelling) Landmark. He grew up there and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1952. During his school years, he was quite an athlete, playing basketball on the State Championship team. He also played baseball and ran track and field where he earned the state high jump record which he held for many years. Although he was awarded collegiate basketball scholarships he instead enlisted in the United States Army and spent over 20 years dedicating his life to our country. He joined on March 20,1953 and served until September 20, 1974 including two tours in Korea, two tours in Germany, and one tour in Vietnam. He married Margaret Mae (Peggy) Warner on January 5, 1957 in Raton, New Mexico. During his career, his family accompanied him to one of his tours to Germany, where they spent four years. They moved to Lawton in 1968 and have remained here since then. Following his retirement after a distinguished military career, he began working at Howard Smith Ford first as a mechanic, then as the Parts Manager and then spent years as the Parts and Service Coordinator until his retirement in 1991. After retiring from Howard Smith he enjoyed walking and wood working in his shop at home, but mostly loved being at home surrounded by his family and friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Landmark of the home; four children and their spouses, Michael (Mike) and Lisa Landmark of Lawton, James (Jim) and Yvonne Landmark of Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England, Brian and Penny Landmark of Lawton, and Kathryn (Kathy) and Brian Campbell of Greenwood, Indiana; 12 grandchildren: Sage Ranallo, Tate Landmark, Jace Landmark, Christina (Crissy) Landmark, Cory and Lauren Landmark, Cole and Rachel Pauley, Erin Pauley, Nathan and Meghan Landmark, Jordan and Chris Zemlin, Heather and Brandon Deem, Karri Campbell, and Jennifer Campbell; four great grandchildren: Mailyn Pauley, Gavin Pauley, Haydn Landmark, and Marlee Knauss; brother-in-law, Charles Warner and his wife, Nance, of Washington; three sisters-in-law, Gayla Augustine and her husband, Ray, of Alexandra, Louisiana, Deanna Harris of Sunset, Florida, and Carol McLain, of Lexington, Nebraska; and his cousin, who was like a brother, LaVerne Landmark and his wife Marlys, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and numerous other family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Daniel Foster.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2602 NW Ferris, Lawton, OK 73505 or to the Lawton Fort Sill Veteran's Center, 501 NE Flower Mound, Lawton, OK 73501.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
