Nicholas “Nick” Wayne Wright was born in Lawton, OK on October 5, 1955. As a child, he attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and went on to graduate from Lawton High School in 1973. At just 18, he opened Central Pawn Shop, which later became Nick’s Pawn and Jewelry, a business he owned and operated until his death. Nick loved the pawn business and the opportunity it gave him for “making deals” and getting to joke around with anyone who might drop by. Nick never met a stranger, and his reputation for wheeling and dealing was legendary.
As a youngster, he was a well-known practical joker, a reputation that he reinforced as an adult as well. It was common knowledge that Nick loved prank calling friends. He would disguise his voice and come up with some comical story, sometimes so outlandish that he could barely contain his own laughter. After realizing it was Nick on the phone, many who received these calls would often play along just to see what he would say next.
Nick was also known for coining his own terms. Sometimes he would use a word to mean something entirely different from its original meaning, for example “Champion,” and other times he would invent one out of thin air, like “nacious.” Nick’s lingo is commonly used among the Wright family and their friends, who know exactly what it means to be told “don’t act like a champion.”
It’s no secret that Nick had a rebellious streak and didn’t always follow the rules, particularly traffic laws. A few years back while driving through the neighborhood where he grew up, Nick checked to make sure there were no other cars approaching and then continued through an intersection without touching the brakes, running a stop sign in the process. When his brother, who was in the passenger seat, asked him why he hadn’t stopped, Nick, still looking straight ahead, said “I never liked that * stop sign.”
Most of all, though, Nick was known for his huge heart and overwhelming generosity. Nick gave everyone a chance, regardless of their current circumstances or past history. The stories of him lending a hand to individuals who were down on their luck are too numerous to mention, and there are surely countless more known only to those he helped.
Among the people on his contact list, Nick was infamous for filling his text messages with quotation marks, capital letters, and excessive punctuation, “for emphasis” he would say. So, in closing… SEE YOU SOON, “""""CHAMP!!!!”””
Nick is survived by three daughters, Maggie Rodriguez and husband, Jorge, Nicole Wright and Abbie Wright, all of Lawton, OK; daughter in law, Nikki Hill, of Wright, of Lawton, OK; two sisters, Karen Dean, of Oklahoma City, OK and Wendy Tatroult, of Lawton, OK; sister in law, Punkin Wright, of Lawton, OK; grandchildren Gabriel, Rylan and Adylan Rodriguez, and Kipton Nicholas Wright; long-time companion, Pamela Pratz, of Lawton, OK; aunts and uncles; nieces and nephews; cousins; a lifetime of valued friends;  and his faithful canine companion, Hank.
Preceded in death by his parents, Iris Joyce and J.T. "Sleepy" Wright; brother, Tony Wright; son, Keegan Wright; paternal grandparents, Maggie and James T. Wright, Sr. of Marlow, OK; maternal grandparents, Eleanor and Hugh Helm of Sydney, Australia; and brother in law, Jimmy Dean.
