Toney "Nanny" Lavern Bass

Funeral service for Toney Lavern "Nanny" Bass, 88 of Lawton will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.O. Howard and Rev. Don Middleton officiating.

Mrs. Bass passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at her home in Lawton.

Burial will be at Walters Cemetery, Walters, Oklahoma.  

There will be a special viewing and visitation for family and friends on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  

Toney was born on February 5, 1931 in Lawton, Oklahoma to Absom Tone and Sallie Ann (Pierce) Barker. She grew up in Lawton where she attended school. She married Fred Marvin Bass, Sr. on January 18, 1946 and they remained in Lawton where they owned and operated The Frosty for many years. Toney then worked at Montgomery Wards and later at Underwoods. She and Fred also owned a burger place at Doe Doe Park for awhile. Fred passed away on August 4, 1984. She later married Roscoe Spires and he passed away on June 13, 2004. She worked as a cook for Sweeney Elementary School until retiring in the early 2000's. She was a member of the Church of God and enjoyed fishing, cooking for the holidays, playing dominoes, riding in the mountains, and the friday night auctions. Her great love was being "Nanny" to her grands whom she adored. 

She is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Vickie and Lennis Nichols, of Antlers, OK and Shirley and Patrick Shugert, of Lawton, OK; her sons and daughters in law, Freddie and Sheila Bass and  Randy and Kelley Bass, all of Lawton, OK; and her many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her brothers and sisters; her daughter, Sara Barnett; her son, Randall Spires; and her grandchildren, Darrin Todd, Jonathan Shugert and Bianca Barnett.
