Memorial service for Tyrphena Jane "Janie" Winfree, 76 of Lawton, Oklahoma will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Locust Grove Baptist Church in Elgin, Oklahoma.
Mrs. Winfree passed away on August 15, 2019 at her home in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.
Janie was born on July 2, 1943 in San Francisco, California to Walter and Mary (Cox) McCarley. The family moved to Lawton where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Lawton High School in 1961. She married James Alton "Jim" Winfree on November 6, 1961 in Lawton where they made their home. Janie worked as Cafeteria Manager for Lawton Public School, retiring in 2007. Janie served as a Doe with the Elks Lodge of Lawton and was voted Doe of the Year for her services in 1978. She was a talented cake decorator and quickly became the family "go-to" for birthday and wedding cakes. She was an active member of LPS Food Service Association, Oklahoma and American School Food Association. She went to various states for the National Food Service conventions. She was adventurous and loved to travel and she loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her son, James Winfree, Jr. of Walters, OK; five daughters and spouses, Marsha and Shane Byrd, of Lawton, OK, Karen Winfree, of Tulsa, OK, Gina and Jerry Turner, of Fort Gibson, OK, Tisha Winfree, of Broken Arrow, OK and Jennifer and Wayne Elam, of Lawton, OK; four brothers and sister in law, Roy McCarley and Joann, of Duncan, OK, Walter and Linda McCarley, of Duncan, OK, Jerry and Carol McCarley, of Rush Springs, OK, and Dennis and Marla McCarley, of Yucaipa, CA; her sisters and brothers in law, Tina and Kenneth Kuntz, Sterling, OK, Sherry and Bob Underwood, of Weatherford, TX, Debbie and Terry Ervin, of Rogers, New Mexico; Chrissy Ray, of Lawton, OK; her 15 grandchildren, Chris, Brandon, John, Carl, Jessica, Megan, Kori, Dakota, Kyle, Kash, Allie, Sierra, Cheyenne, Brad, and Javen; 15 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Alton "Jim" Winfree, Sr.; her sister, Doreen Weeks; three brothers, Gary McCarley, Paul McCarley, and Jim Frank McCarley; and her brother in law, Rayburn Ray.
