Pauline “Polly” Byrns went to her heavenly home on July 26, 2015, in Tuttle, OK.
A celebration of her life will be at First Baptist Lawton Chapel on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home with John Cullison of FBC, in Grandfield until T.G. became an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper in 1950. She continued working as an operator in Pawnee and Guymon until 1958 when she began a nursing career in Altus. When T.G. got stationed in Lawton in 1962, she started working for Dr. Ross P. Demas where she eventually became certified as an Medical Assistant and then retired in 1988. She had been a member of First Baptist Church, Lawton, since 1962. For the last three years, she resided at Ten Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton.
Polly was very active in the community. She was a Lady Shriner, member of the Elks Lodge, Lawton Book and Play, Bridge Club, and Fidelity Sunday School Class at First Baptist, Lawton.
Since her retirement she stayed busy by working for the Comanche County Election Board, volunteering at the Center for Creative Living, and visiting and delivering flowers to the homebound for First Baptist Church. She loved helping with funeral lunches at church and having fun with her lady friends.
Polly loved to cook, shop, garden, travel, read the newspaper and clip news articles, send cards, and visit with friends. She also was an avid runner. In her most recent years, she enjoyed playing Skip Bo, Bingo and Wii Bowling. Polly will be remembered by her family and friends for being a gracious hostess and an aspiring chef. She will also be remembered for her prim and proper attire, fresh hair do, blingy jewelry and a necessity for appropriate etiquette at all times. Not many know, but as a teenager, she took art lessons and was a very talented artist. She was affectionately known as “Granny Polly.”
Polly was preceded in death by her husband, T. G. Byrns in 2005, and her sisters, Grace Phillips, Josephine Lewis, Lorine Fisher, Mary Bolton, and Quinnie Cromwell.
She is survived by one son, Grant Byrns Jr. and wife Kathy, of Tuttle, OK, and her grandchildren, Gary Byrns and wife Heather of Lawton, Kacie Watson and husband Kit of Tuttle, OK, Kendall Novak and husband Chad of Edmond, OK, and Truett G. “Trey” Byrns III and wife Maria of Oklahoma City, OK, and 4 great grandchildren, Kya Watson, Audrey Watson, Hunter Watson, and Payton Novak, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Oklahoma Chapter 2123 N. Classen Blvd., Oklahoma City, Ok 73106.
